»Populism, Postmodernism and the Promise of Art: Overcoming the Legacy of May '68«

We’ve become familiar with the question of whether the political events of May 68 embodied the promise of a utopia that unfortunately failed or a dystopia that unfortunately succeeded. We’ve also started to become familiar with the question of whether the great intellectual events of the year (for example, foundational texts and works by Roland Barthes and Robert Morris, Eva Hesse and Andy Warhol) marked a breakthough for a more democratic and egalitarian era in art or a defeat for the very idea of art. This talk will try first to formulate these questions as different aspects of a single question and then to answer that question.
